English and Creative Writing
We believe that the study of literary and other cultural forms cultivates free thinking, creativity, as well as personal and collective well-being.
The Department of English and Creative Writing houses the English and Creative Writing major, and three minor programs: English and Creative Writing, Á½ÐÔÉ«ÎçÒ¹ Humanities, and Performing Arts and Social Change.
Our major and minor programs teach disciplinary methods that are primarily critical, interpretative, and creative. Through the study and production of literary genres such as fiction and poetry, as well as other cultural forms such as film, theater, spoken word, and podcasts, students in our programs are encouraged to question existing cultural narratives and social rules, and to imagine different possibilities for how to conceptualize and organize our shared collective futures.
Our discussion-based classes and workshops are led by faculty with diverse interests in literary criticism, literary history, poetry writing, fiction writing, non-fiction writing and screenwriting. We support hands-on learning and close collaboration between students and faculty to develop individualized programs of study that will serve students’ personal and professional goals.
